If your walls are currently textured or there are tiles or glossy paint present on the walls, these will need to be removed from the wall before attempting to lay the vinyl floor planks. This will ensure that the planks are able to adhere correctly and that no lumps or uneven sections will show through the vinyl planks after they have been laid.

The best way to smooth your walls off before applying the vinyl plank flooring will be to sand them down. However, if you are not too keen on spending a lot of time doing this, it is also possible to place 1/8-inch hardboard sheets over the wall before attempting to lay the vinyl floor planks on to it. If you choose to sand your walls, it is strongly recommended that low grit sandpaper is used in conjunction with an electric sanding machine.

Priming the Walls

If there is existing paint on the walls, it should be covered with primer. This will help the adhesive for the vinyl tiles to stick far better. It is also a good idea to have your primer product tinted to a color that is as close as possible to the color of the vinyl planks that are going to be installed on your walls. This way, if there ends up being a gap on the wall for any reason, it will be relatively well disguised until such time as a replacement plank can be installed.

Using the Right Adhesive

It is essential that the correct adhesive product is used to keep the vinyl floor planks in place on your bathroom walls. The adhesive should also only be applied once the primer product has thoroughly dried. After applying the adhesive to the walls, it should be allowed to get a little tacky before applying the tiles as well, as this will ensure that they do not move after being laid.

Hiring the Right Installer

Many homeowners make the mistake of trying to shop around for the cheapest prices when they want to have vinyl planks installed on their bathroom walls. However, this can – and often does – result in them being saddled with an inexperienced contractor who has no idea how to get the job done correctly.

Step 1: Surface preparation

Trafficmaster Allure can be installed over wood or concrete subfloors even over existing vinyl or tile flooring. If you are installing vinyl flooring over an existing tile floor check that the grout lines are not larger than the quarter inch.

If they are, the floor will need to be leveled using a patching compound. Allure planks and tiles are pliable and over time larger grout lines will become visible. If you installing it over concrete subfloor check for moisture.

A 6mil poly underlayment should be used when moisture levels are above 5%. Regardless of the subfloor material it must be sound, solid and have a little flexibility.

Step 2: Plan the Installation

Begin by measuring the rooms length and divide it by the length of the planks. Be sure to allow for a quarter inch gap on either end. If the resulting level is less than 12 inches you will need to cut first plank accordingly to avoid to having planks less than 12 inches on the opposite site of the room.

Measure the width of the room and divide it with the width of the plank. If the number is less than half of the width of the plank you will need to trim the first and last row on the equal widths. This will result in a more balanced looking room at the end of the installation.

Step 3: Install The First Row

If the seam doesn’t appear to be tight you can immediately separate two planks and start over. Slowly pull the upper plank off the lower plank being careful not to damage or tear the gripstrip. Readjust and roll the seam again.

You can rework seams up to 15 minutes before the adhesive become permanent. Continue laying planks and rolling the seams as you go until the row is complete.
