What is Citrix XenApp?
I think Citrix technologies can be a bit different. There are lots of documentation out there but it can take time to read it and at the end you still might not have a good understanding of what XenApp is.so in this article I will describe, in simple terms, what Citrix XenApp is, what it can do and how it works.

Citrix XenApp is just anoperational software. XenApp also known as Presentation Server, MetaFrame, and WinFrame in older versions.
What it does Actually?
Citrix XenApp provides application virtualization (now integrated as part of XenDesktop), and Citrix XenDesktop, Citrix VDI-in-a-Box and XenClient all provide desktop virtualization. The DesktopPlayer for Mac allows online and offline access to Windows virtual desktops from Macs. XenApp relies on the same Citrix foundation that Microsoft's thin client platform does, but XenApp uses the ICA protocol rather than Microsoft's RDP for transferring keyboard, mouse and screen data.
XenApp allows you to install and configure applications on servers and then access installed applications without having to install anything on the client’s devices through the Citrix client software. All processing is completed by the XenApp server. Citrix using a protocol for the all process in the citrix infrastructure called Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) and users it feels like the application is running as locally on their client’s operating system.
XenApp is also works to publish the server’s desktop and giving users a complete Windows environment onthe server along with access to the applications installed on it. It’s called a Hosted Shared Desktop.
How it helps to Infra?
Advantages of the Hosted Shared Desktops(HSD) is you can centrally manage the Operating System and Applications and also can quickly deploy applications to many users without dedicatedly install application s on each client devices . User can install the Citrix client software once and then you can deploy any application to any machine without having separately visit for the same. All the processing is doing on the XenApp servers. XenApp Work Flow
Currently XenApp 6.5 is the latest one, which can only be installed on Windows 2008 R2. Server must have Windows Remote Desktop Services Session Host Role installed on it.
There are four versions of XenApp server – 1: Fundamentals 2: Advanced 3: Enterprise 4: Platinum.
Client Software Work
Citrix client software work is communicate with the XenApp server and fulfill the all assigned requests. Also it helps to make a platform for the devices to run the citrix environment. Client’s devices must have
citrix client software.
For Citrix Web Interface, user need to install Citrix Online Plug-in Web.To be able to stream applications to clients you must have the Citrix Offline Plug-in installed on their devices .Citrix Receiver is a client that works across multiple devices (Windows, iOS, Android) and gives a unified look and feel to users, whichever devices they are using. It also incorporates function such as user self-services to applications.
XenApp Licensing Information
For XenApp server, Remote Desktop Services License Server and a Citrix License Server are required.
